Delmar H. Canfield

Delmar H. Canfield, 77 year old resident of Battle Lake, MN formerly of Swanville and Little Falls, MN passed away Thursday, November 24, 2011 at the Golden Living Center on Otter Tail Lake. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Rev. David Packo officiating. Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls. Visitation will be 4-8 PM on Monday at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the Shelley Funeral Chapel. Military Rites will be conducted by the Swanville American Legion Post #313 and the Swanville VFW Post #6037. Delmar H. Canfield was born on August 17, 1934 in Nobles County, Minnesota to the late Howard & Martha (Stumpf) Canfield. He attended Worthington Elementary School, until the family moved to Grey Eagle, Minnesota where Del attended country school. He joined the U.S. Army on March 12, 1953 serving in Germany and in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1961. Delmar was united in marriage to Delores (Dee) Opsal in August of 1958. The couple resided in Swanville, Minnesota. He worked as a mechanic for Loven’s for 32 years, then drove semi’s for Sonny Peterson Trucking in Swanville until retiring in 1999. In 2003 Delmar moved to Pine Grove Manor in Little Falls then to Bridgeway Estates Apartments. He enjoyed deer hunting and was a member of the Swanville VFW Post #6037. Delmar was also a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club. He is survived by his son, Brian Canfield of Swanville, MN; daughters, Sheryl (David) Hedin of Swanville, MN, Laurie (David) Walker of Park Rapids, MN, Peggy Muellner of Long Prairie, MN, and Penny (Bruce) Hoemberg of Staples, MN; sisters, Louise (Roger) Walter of Little Falls, MN, Anna Meagher of Grey Eagle, MN, Luetta (Bud) Rhode of Burtrum, MN, Marian (Lonny) Leebens of Slayton, MN, Sylvia (Eugene) Hoffman of St. Cloud, MN, and Elizabeth (Turk) Vanlith of Delano, MN; brothers, Norman Canfield of Ellsworth, WI, Lorenz Canfield of Fairfax, MN, and Leonard Canfield of Winnemucca, NV; 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Delmar was preceded in death by his parents, Howard & Martha (Stumpf) Canfield; son, Steve Canfield (1990); son-in-law, Jon Determan; sisters, Delores Graber, and Gloria Clear; wife, Delores (Dee) Canfield (2008). Casketbearers will be Jerimiah Determan, Mickey Walker, Jason Walker, Joni Canfield, Ginny Determan, and Shawna Muellner.
