Donald A. Walz

Donald A. Walz 75 year old resident of Renville, MN, formerly of Pierz, MN passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the St. Cloud Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, November 14th at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Hillman, MN. Father Greg Poser, OSC, will officiate. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday, November 13th at Shelley-Virnig Funeral Chapel in Pierz, and from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Thursday at the church. Parish Prayers will be at 7 PM on Wednesday. Military Honors will be provided by Hillman American Legion Post #602. Donald Alphonse Walz was born on September 18, 1938 in Pierz Township, MN to the late Edward and Gertrude (Schuller) Walz. He grew up on the family farm and attended the local school. Donald enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958 and served overseas in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1960. Donald was united in marriage to Janet Brausen on June 27, 1964 at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Hillman, MN. Together they settled in Minneapolis and raised their family. Donald was employed at Prospect Foundry in Minneapolis as an inspector, and worked there for the next 42 years. In 2003, Donald retired and he and Janet moved to Renville, MN. Donald enjoyed hunting and fishing, along with the family gatherings associated with these activities. He spent a lot of time with his grandchildren, watching their sporting events, and other functions. Donald liked to watch the Twins and Timberwolves’ games as well. Donald will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 49 1/2 years, Janet; sons, Don (Christine) Walz of Mapleton, ND, Gerry (Allyson) Walz of Hudson, WI, and Ron (Rachel) Walz of New London, MN; daughter, Sheila (David) Martin of Brainerd, MN; brother, Wilfred (Phyllis) Walz of Pinckney, MI; sisters, Mildred Voelker of Little Falls, MN, Dolores Weiss of Brainerd, and Marie (Herbert) Herold of St. Cloud, MN; sister-in-laws, Louene Walz of Pierz, and Lorraine Walz of Little Falls; 14 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John Walz, Edward Walz, Mike Walz, Rhiney Walz, and Raymond Walz; sisters, Hildegard Walz and two infant brothers. Casketbearers will be Don Walz, Gerry Walz, Ron Walz, Bryan Walz, Ryan Walz, and Josiah Walz.
