Harvey A. Hempeck

Harvey Hempeck, 86-year-old resident of Little Falls, MN passed away Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Little Falls Care Center. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Jake Dyrhaug officiating. Burial will be at the MN State Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at Shelley Funeral Chapel and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. There will be a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Military Rites will be conducted by the Little Falls American Legion Post 46. Harvey Allen Hempeck was born on April 7, 1932 in Mountain Lake, MN, to the late Herman Adolph and Verna Eleanor (Huffman) Hempeck. Harvey attended elementary school there until his family moved to Alexandria and later to Sauk Centre, where he graduated with the class of 1950. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He married the love of his life, LaVerne Rasmusen on September 10, 1955 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage. Harvey attended Saint Cloud State University where he graduated with a bachelor of science. He began his career of media specialist/librarian working at Lindbergh School, part of the Little Falls School district in 1958. He spent his entire career working there and enjoyed his daily interactions with students. Harvey retired in 1995, enjoying a 37-year career. Harvey was often called “Mr. Lindbergh” for his active role in the Lindbergh School. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Little Falls Legion, Morrison County Soil and Water, Democratic Party of Morrison County, Little Falls Education Association, where he served many years as president and Little Falls retired educators, where he also served as President for many years. He was a member of many other educational and civic committees. Harvey enjoyed playing cards, especially poker, cribbage, watching any type of sporting event and traveling. Harvey was known for his love of family. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren. Harvey is survived by his wife, LaVerne of Little Falls, MN; daughters, Sheryl (Brad) Johnson and Kristen (Richard) Schwanke, both of Little Falls, MN; grandchildren, Nicholas (Abby) Peterschick of Fargo, ND, Nathan (Crystal) Peterschick of Little Falls, Nils Johnson of Minneapolis, MN, Noah Peterschick of Blaine, MN, Aaron (Kayla) Johnson of Little Falls, MN, Richard Schwanke, Jr., Arik Schwanke and Hannah Schwanke all of Little Falls, MN; great-grandchildren, Adrian Snyder and Liam Peterschick. He is also survived by brothers, Roger Hempeck of Phoenix, AZ, and William (Mary) Hempeck of Sisters, OR, and sister, Kathy (Eldon) Sprague of Keizer, OR; brother in law, Merlin (Truma) Rasmusen of Sauk Centre, MN, and sister-in-law, JoAnne Hempeck of Portland, OR. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Verna Hempeck; siblings, Melvin Hempeck, and Donald Hempeck; sisters-in-law, LaVonne Hempeck and Ilene Nett.
