Herbert Virnig

Herbert M. “Hub” Virnig, 65 year old resident of Pierz, MN, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2009 at St. Cloud Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial for Herbert will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, September 24 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz, with Father Gerald Dalseth officiating. Burial will be at St. John Nepomuk Parish Cemetery in Lastrup, MN. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday, September 23, and also from 9-10 AM on Thursday at the Shelley-Virnig Funeral Chapel in Pierz. Christian Mothers will pray the rosary at 4:30 PM followed by Parish Prayers at 6:30 PM and Knights of Columbus Office of the Dead prayer service at 7 PM Wednesday. Herbert Michael Virnig was born on May 10, 1944 in Little Falls, MN, to the late Peter & Marie (Block) Virnig. He graduated from Father Pierz Memorial High School in 1962. Herb was united in marriage to Marcella “Sally” Smude on May 23, 1970 at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup and the couple then moved to Roseville and resided there for 31 years. Herb worked at Stroh’s Brewery until his retirement and the brewery’s closing in 1997. Herbert and Sally moved back to Pierz in 2001. Herb enjoyed fishing, vegetable gardening, and old cars. Once a week he attended Adoration Service at Pierz Villa. Herb loved spending time with family and friends. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz and the Knights Of Columbus Council #3892. Herb was a loving husband, dad, and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by all. Herb is survived by his wife Sally Virnig of Pierz, MN; son, Michael Virnig of Minneapolis, MN; daughters, Kelly (John) Nemec of Peshtigo, WI, Shannon (Mark) Ivory of Blaine, MN, and Sarah Virnig of St. Paul, MN; Grandchildren, Lex, Levi, & Lincoln Nemec; brothers, Wilfred Virnig of Hillman, MN, Ronald (Doris) Virnig of Hillman, MN, and Vernon (Mary) Virnig of Pierz, MN; sisters, Helen (Roland) Dehn of St. Louis Park, MN, and Marie (Richard) Griswold of Winona, MN; sister-in-law Elnora Virnig of Long Prairie, MN; and mother-in-law Arlene Smude of Pierz, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Marie Virnig; brother Urban Virnig; father-in-law Edward Smude; and sister-in-law Dolores Virnig. Honorary Casketbearers will be Lori Virnig, Jayne Fischer, and Allie Busker. Active Casketbearers will be Jason Virnig, Jeff Virnig, Jim Virnig, Billy Virnig, Pat Virnig, and Rob Clemons.
