Howard W. Wegner

Howard W. Wegner, 89 year old resident of Waconia, MN, formerly of Little Falls, MN passed away Monday, July 22, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society Care Center in Waconia, MN. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at First Lutheran Church in Little Falls, MN with Rev. David Sperstad officiating. Burial will take place at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. on Wednesday at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the Church. Military Honors will be conducted by the Little Falls American Legion Post #46. Howard William Wegner was born on March 4, 1924 in Raymond, Minnesota to the late Herman & Ida (Buss) Wegner. He grew up in Raymond, was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church. Howard graduated from Raymond High School in 1942, where he was a star baseball player. Howard attended Macalester College before being drafted in 1943 into the U.S. Army at the age of 19. He drove amphibious tractors in Hawaii, Philippines and Japan in WWII. In May of 1943 he was honorably discharged, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. While going to St. Cloud College he met and married the love of his life, Doris Tietz, on August 6, 1949. Howard graduated from St. Cloud University with degrees in Physical Education & Industrial Arts. He taught in Huntley, MN from 1951 to1953 and in Brewster MN from 1953 to 1955; also coaching basketball and football. The couple moved to Glencoe MN from 1955 to 1966, teaching Industrial Arts in Buffalo Lake, MN. He worked summers at the Glencoe Green Giant Co. Howard received a Masters Degree in Counseling from Mankato State and moved to Little Falls MN in 1966 where he was the Middle School Counselor and Drivers Education Instructor until retirement in 1984. Howard was a member of the Little Falls Lions, MEA, Teachers Association, United Way Board of Directors, donated many hours to the Habitat for Humanity, active in the Little Falls American Legion, Gideon's Society and many positions of leadership in the church. Howard enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. Howie had the gift of working with wood, and built many items for churches, family & friends as well as wood carvings. He is remembered by his loving wife of almost 64 years, Doris; daughter, Christine and husband, Douglas Scholla of Waconia MN; grandchildren, Heidi (Scholla) and Alex Cisse, Tim & Tia Scholla, Katie (Scholla) & John Oakes; great grandchildren, James Cisse, Brooke & Haley Scholla and Adair Oakes; sister, Marilyn Goeman; sister-in-laws, Lorraine Wegner and Maxine Wegner. Howard "Pops" was a gentle, kind, special loving man who quietly loved very much his God, family, church, community and country. Pallbearers will be Bill Wegner, Bob Wegner, Tim Scholla, Dan Goeman, Katie Oakes and Heidi Cisse.
