Irene K. Fischer-Gaebel, 103 year-old resident of Lastrup, MN passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at the Pierz Villa in Pierz, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup, MN with Father David Maciej officiating. Burial will take place in the St. John Nepomuk Parish Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4-6 P.M. on Friday, September 9 at the Pierz Villa and from 10-11 A.M. on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the Church in Lastrup, MN. A Christian Mothers Rosary and Secular Franciscan prayer service will be at 4:30 P.M. on Friday at the Pierz Villa. Funeral arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Pierz, MN. Irene Katherine Fischer-Gaebel was born on April 14, 1913 at Lastrup, MN the daughter of Bernard and Katherine Ellering Athman. She grew up in the Lastrup area and attended Public School District #36. On October 16, 1935, Irene was united in marriage to Herbert John Fischer. This union was blessed with 5 children. They made their home on a farm in Lastrup, MN. In the fall of 1965, Herb and Irene purchased a house in Lastrup. Herb died April 3, 1971. Irene married Ambrose Gaebel on December 27, 1978 in Lastrup. Ambrose’s daughter, Georgine and son, Larry became a part of Irene’s family. Ambrose died in 1984. Irene worked in the kitchen at the Pierz Villa for 5 years. She worked as a dietician for the lunch program at St. John’s School in Lastrup for 10 years. She was a member of St John Nepomuk Church in Lastrup all her life. There she served as Eucharistic Minister, member of Christian Mothers, Rosary group, Altar Group Charter Member, Bible Study Groups, member of the Secular Order of Franciscans, Mission Groups, American Legion Auxiliary #341 and Catholic United Financial. She received the Catholic United Financial Community Service Award in 2002 and served many funeral dinners. Her hobbies included gardening and quilting. She made many quilts for her children and grandchildren. She made and donated many quilts for fundraisers. For over 30 years she spent winter months in California. She always lived within one mile of the church until August, 2009 when she moved to the Pierz Villa. Survivors include her children Corinne Bahe of Belgrade, James (Joanne) Fischer of Lastrup, Marlene Fischer of Eden Prairie, Eugene Fischer of St Cloud, Anthony (Ann) Fischer of Santa Barbara, CA, Georgine (Willie) Nathe of Freeport and Larry Gaebel of Freeport; brothers Edward (Lorraine) and Bernard (Judy); sisters Bernadine (Ray) Loidolt and Alice (Arnold) Poser; 24 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Marcia (Coelestin) Athman and Mary Ann (Alex) Athman; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Herbert and Ambrose; son-in-law Andrew Bahe, daughter-in-law Judy Fischer, great grandson Mathew McNamara, brothers Norbert, Irwin, Coelestin, Virgil, Alex, infant Victor, sisters Evelyn Branson and Marie Banach.
