Joseph Holig

Joseph R. Holig was born July 1, 1917 in Browerville, MN to the late Robert J. & Mary ‘Wroot’ Holig. He grew up in Browerville and graduated from the Browerville High School. After graduating, he attended St. Thomas University for one year. Joseph was united in marriage to Marjorie C. Canfield on November 22, 1939 in Long Prairie, MN. The couple resided in Perham, MN for three years where Joe began his career in the banking business. In 1942, they relocated to Swanville, MN when Joe was offered a position at First State Bank of Swanville. He purchased the bank in 1962 and served as President of the bank until 1982. After over 40 years in the banking business, Joe sold the bank to his son, Robert J. Holig and retired. Joe was one of Swanville’s most influential citizens. When talking about Joe, one word was always used to describe him, respect. In the banking world, he was one of the most respected and progressive bankers in his era in this region. As an employer, he treated his employees with honesty and fairness. As a result, he earned their utmost respect. The same can be said of his customers. He was easy to talk to and always took the time to visit. You knew you could trust Joe to be fair and honest. Joe will be greatly missed by his family and the entire community. His beloved wife, Marjorie passed away on Nov. 12, 1983. Joe enjoyed wintering in Scottsdale, AZ. The last few years, he has resided there year long. Joe enjoyed hunting and had made trips to Canada and Alaska. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing and spending time in his work shop. Joe was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, National Rifle Association and the Swanville Lions. Joseph R. Holig is survived by his: Son: Robert J. Holig & wife, Sandy of Swanville, MN Daughters: Mary Nunke & husband, Jim, Registered RVers Ann LaFond of Scottsdale, AZ 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Joseph R. Holig was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marjorie; grandson, Joseph ‘Josh’ Holig and a sister, Lillian Holig. Casketbearers will be John & Janene Holig, Mike & Joe Nunke, Dan, Mike & Tom LaFond.
