LuVerne L. "Monk" Carlson

LuVerne “Monk” Carlson, 91 year old resident of Little Falls, MN, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2015 at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls. Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Father Nicholas Landsberger officiating. Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls. Military Rites will be conducted by the Little Falls American Legion Post #46. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the Shelley Funeral Chapel. Luverne “Monk” Carlson was born in Thief River Falls, MN to Henry and Boletta (Lappegaard) Carlson. He was united in marriage to Ardyce “Ardie” Charlton on April 6, 1952 in Stephen, MN. In 1940, Monk worked on the Kaiser Liberty Ships in Richmond, California. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 where he served in the Pacific on the USS Thedis Bay. After an Honorable Discharge in 1944, he attended the Academy of Horology in Colorado. After graduation from the Academy, he worked as a watch repairman at Wangenstein Jewelry Store in Thief River Falls, MN until he and Ardie moved to Roseau, MN opening up a Jewelry Store. In 1962, he and Ardie along with their children moved to Little Falls, MN where he purchased Wetzel Jewelry. In 1985, Carlson Jewelers opened in Brainerd, MN in the Westgate Mall. Monk was active in the Little Falls Chamber of Commerce and a Member of the Exchange Club. Monk was also a member of the American Legion Post #0046. Monk enjoyed golfing, traveling, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. LuVerne “Monk” Carlson is survived by his daughters, Leslie Dick and husband, Gregg of Little Falls, MN and Lynn Tatro and husband, John of Little Falls, MN; grandchildren, Christina (Dick) & Daryl Boeckers of Buffalo, MN, Michelle (Dick) & Aaron Stupar of Becker, MN, Kimberly (Dick) & Bryan Thayer, serving in the Air force in Germany, Jed Tatro of Alexandria, MN, Jacob Carlson, Brainerd, MN, Jason and Joshua Collins, Brainerd, MN; 6 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Toni Carlson of Brainerd, MN; special friend, Van Engelstad. Monk was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ardie son, Tim Carlson; siblings, Robert, Marvin, Millie, Leonard, Ellery and Melvin.
