Norbert J. Barnes

Norbert J. Barnes, 89-year-old resident of Little Falls, MN, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2016, at Little Falls Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN with Father Joseph Herzing officiating. A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 P.M. on Friday at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. on Saturday at the Shelley Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery in Little Falls, MN. Parish Prayers will be at 5:30 PM on Friday at the funeral chapel. Military Rites will be conducted by the Little Falls American Legion Post #46 and the Little Falls VFW Post #1112. Norbert John Barnes was born on October 9, 1926, in Lakeville, Minnesota to the late Albert and Caroline (Speiker) Barnes. He attended school in Lakeville. The family relocated to Harding, Minnesota, where Norbert finished his schooling. He began working in St. Paul at Fairway Foods warehouse, before enlisting in the United States Army. Norbert served during WW II, and was discharged in 1946 as a sergeant. After being discharged, Norbert moved to Little Falls and worked at Hennipen Paper Mill. He was a chief engineer from 1950 until he retired in 1988. Norbert was united in marriage to Marion I. Seelen on September 16, 1948. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, life member of American Legion Post #46, life member of VFW Post #1112, life member of Cooties Post #67, past Post Commander of VFW Post #1112, past 6th District Commander, All American District Commander (1982), All State Post Commander (1977), Past Seam Squirrel of M.O.C. Post #67 (Military Order of the Cooties), life member of D.A.V. , and member of the Knights of Columbus. Norbert is survived by loving wife, Marion Barnes of Little Falls, MN; son, John (Linda)Barnes of Little Falls, MN; daughters, Caroline (Charles) Dresen of Prior Lake, MN; Margaret Barnes of Little Falls, MN; and Mary Ellen Barnes of Little Falls, MN; brother Pat Barnes of Elk River; sister, Rose Blank of St. Paul, MN; and Margaret Vidlund of New Brighton, MN; grandchildren, Chris Dresen, Carrie Dresen Lee, Cathi Dresen Zerwas, Lori Barnes, Lindsey Barnes, and Julie Barnes Kaiser; and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Caroline Barnes; brothers, George and Albert Barnes; and sisters, Catherine Seelen and Rita Bzdok.
