Verna I. Wolthuizen

Verna I. Wolthuizen, 91 year old resident of Pierz, MN, formerly of Minneapolis and Sheldon, IA, went to be with her Lord while surrounded by her family on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Harmony House in Pierz. Funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, April 29th at Fellowship Bible Church, south of Genola, MN, with Pastor Brandon Bellomo officiating. Burial will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN at 1 PM on Wednesday, April 30th. Friends and family may call for Celebration of her life from 4 to 7 PM on Monday, April 28th at Shelley-Virnig Funeral Chapel in Pierz and from 10 to 11 AM on Tuesday at the church. Verna Irene Borgman was born on November 2, 1922 in Sheldon, Iowa to the late Benjamin and Margaret (VanZee) Borgman. She was raised there and attended the local school and helping on the family farm.. Verna loved animals and had several pets while growing up, including pigs. She also played the accordion when she was young. Verna was united in marriage to Marion Wolthuizen on September 27, 1945 on the family farm in Archer, IA. They moved in with her parents and worked the family farm with them, and continued to farm when her parents retired. Verna enjoyed raising flowers and vegetables, and canning the produce, all while raising her family. In 1965, the family moved to Minneapolis where Marion worked in manufacturing, and she was a homemaker. Verna then started sewing quilts, many for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed taking trips out west with Marion and the family. Marion passed away in 1991, and Verna moved in with her daughter, Myrna in Pierz, MN. She entered into Harmony House in 2007, and again started sewing quilts, almost to the very end. Verna enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with her grandchildren. She attended Family Bible Church, loved her Lord Jesus and read her bible every day. Verna is survived by children, Jerry Wolthuizen of Pillager, MN; Myrna (Larry) Juetten, and Audrey Otterness, both of Pierz, MN; 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marion; granddaughter, Jennifer Frye; and sister, Arvilla Kamstra.
