Wilfred "Sonny" Virnig

Wilfred “Sonny” Virnig, 89 year old resident of Hillman, MN, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup, MN with Father David Maciej officiating. A Visitation will be held from 8:30 –10:00 A.M. on Saturday at the Church. Arrangements are with Shelley-Virnig Funeral Chapel in Pierz, MN. Wilfred was born on July 10, 1925 in Hillman, MN to the late Peter and Marie (Block) Virnig. He grew up and attended Country School in the Hillman area. He was united in marriage to Dolores Motschke on September 15, 1952 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Buckman, MN. The couple made their home in Hillman, MN on a the farm next to where Sonny was born. He was a very hard worker and instilled in his children that work always came before play. Sonny was an avid gardener and loved to make homemade ice cream and sausage. He also enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, dancing and old time music. Sonny was very proud of his old Alice Chalmers tractor that he restored to its original. He was a very family oriented man that always loved when the family would get together. He was a member of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup, MN. Sonny was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Sonny is survived by sons, Bill (Sandy) Virnig of Hillman, MN, Jeff Virnig of Pierz, MN, James Virnig of Pierz, MN, and Patrick Virnig of Hillman, MN; daughters, Jackie (Gary) Moser of Brainerd, MN and Joyce (Brad) Lindgren of Dassel, MN; brothers, Ronald (Doris) Virnig of Hillman, MN and Vernon (Mary) Virnig of Pierz, MN; sisters, Helen Dehn of St. Louis Park, MN and Marie (Richard) Griswold of Winona, MN; sister-in-law, Sally Virnig of Pierz, MN; grandchildren, Melissa, Kristie, Stacey, Ashley, Peter, Ryan, Brittney, Cassandra, Chad, Alissa, Justin, Joshua, and Brianna; great-grandchildren, Nichole, Cody, Dylan, Emily, Logan, Cody, Ava, Olivia, Evan, Morgan, Gus, Grace, Griffin, Jack, Lucy, Avery, Cayden, Brayden, and Bryar. Sonny was preceded in death by parents, Peter and Marie Virnig; wife, Dolores Virnig (2009); bro thers, Urban Virnig and Herbert Virnig; granddaughter, Sheila Moser; and great-grandson, Gavin Baldry.
