Helen Matros

Helen Matros, 88 year old resident of Freedhem, MN passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Pierz Villa in Pierz, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 15, 2015 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie, MN with Father Jeremy Ploof officiating. Burial will be at Holy Family Parish Cemetery in Belle Prairie. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service on Monday at the church. Helen was born on February 26, 1927 in Two Rivers Township, South Elmdale, Minnesota to the late Michael Sr. and Christine (Hovanes) Pfafcan. She went to district 136 (Hisick School) through the 8th grade, then she attended Upsala High School. Helen was a member of the St. Mary’s Russian Greek Orthodox Church in South Elmdale, and was presently a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie. At the age of 16, Helen went to work at the South St. Paul Packing Plant, and then as a waitress on Hollywood and Vine in California. She was united in marriage to George Matros, Sr. on January 29, 1948 in Bowlus, MN. Helen also worked at the Cliffwood Motel and worked several years in the kitchen at the Little Falls Middle School. She enjoyed all her animals including, cows, pigs, cats, dogs, raising chickens, gardening, flowers, cooking and baking, wine making, dancing and listening to old time music. She is survived by George Matros, Sr. of Royalton, MN; sons, Donald Matros of Pierz, MN; and George Matros, Jr. of Pelican Rapids, MN; daughters, Shirley Matros of Royalton, MN; and Sharon Matros (Lt. Col. Andrew Engelhardt) of Little Falls, MN; grandchildren, Roger (Susan) Matros of Griswold, CT; Tim (Amy Jo) Matros of Little Falls, MN; Dr. Nicole Matros of Columbia, SC; Kristi (Matt) Lindeman of Sauk Rapids, MN; Tracy Matros (John Jones) of Pierz, MN; Matt Matros of Sartell, MN; Nathan Matros of Little Falls, MN; Tyler Matros of Pelican Rapids, MN; Eric (Vanessa) Engelhardt of Tampa, FL; and 1st Lt. Adam Engelhardt of Sheppard AFB, TX; former daughter-in-laws, Becky Ruark of Dekalb, MO; and Darlene Matros of Little Falls, MN; sister, Irene Wright of Northridge, CA; 18 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Richard in 1988; sister, Eva; brothers, George Plafcan, Paul Plafcan, Sr., Alex Pfafcan, and Michael Plafcan, Jr. Pallbearers will be Tim Matros, Matt Matros, Tracy Matros, Kristi Lindeman, Nathan Matros, and Amy Jo Matros.
