Howard J. Garry

Howard J. Garry 94 year old resident of Fort Meyers, FL formerly of Little Falls, MN passed away Friday, August 30, 2013 in Fort Meyers, FL. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN with Father Joe Herzing officiating. Burial will take place at St. Adalbert's Cemetery in Little Falls, MN. Friends may call from 10-11 A.M. on Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN. Funeral arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Howard was born on August 25, 1919 in Bridgewater, SD to the late Leo and Eunice (Gildea) Garry. He grew up and attended school in the Bridgewater, SD area. In 1938 he received his teaching certificate from Eastern Normal College in Madison, SD. He then went on to South Dakota State University for 1 year before enlisting in the Army-Air Force. Howard enlisted into the US Army-Air Force on June 22, 1942 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 11, 1945 and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Upon his honorable discharge Howard returned to South Dakota State University where he received his Agriculture Education Degree. Howard was united in marriage to Jean Petree on February 27, 1947 in Montrose, SD. He taught Agriculture in Little Falls, MN from 1947 until 1952. While he was teaching he also consulted farmers in the Little Falls area. Howard later worked at the Little Falls Granite Works in Little Falls, MN as a traveling salesman putting on over 1000 miles a week. He later bought in to the Little Falls Granite Works and continued working there as a salesman. His passion in life was to work, but also enjoyed journaling and keeping his lawn looking immaculate. He was a member of the Little Falls American Legion, Little Falls VFW and Little Falls Rotary Club to which he never missed a meeting. Howard was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Howard is survived by wife of 66 years Jean Garry of Ft. Meyers, FL; son, Tim (Kathy) Garry of Forest Lake, MN; daughter, Michele “Shelly” Garry and husband Keith Fitterer of Ft. Meyers, FL; grandchildren, Michael Garry and fiancé Megan Kasper of Bemidji, MN and Sean-Tom Garry of Fargo, ND. Howard was preceded in death by parents, Leo and Eunice Garry and brothers and sisters.
