Irene L. Dengel

Irene L. Dengel, 96 year old resident of Southern Pine, NC formerly of Little Falls, MN passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2015 in Southern Pine, NC. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Monday, September 21, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN. Burial will take place in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls, MN. A visitation will be held from 9:30-11:30 A.M. on Monday, September 21, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN. Local arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Irene Louise Dengel was born in Belle Prairie Township, MN, February 13, 1919, to John H. and Jeanette (Schubert) Timm. She graduated from Little Falls High School and attended St. Cloud Business College. In her early years she was employed as secretary-bookkeeper by The Ryan Company; later years by the Little Falls School District and prior to her retirement in 1982 as typesetter for 14 years for the Little Falls Daily Transcript newspaper. During her final years with the paper, she produced the newspaper’s historical column. She married Leonard J. Hamernick September 1, 1941, who was killed in action November 26, 1943, during a bombing mission in Germany during World War II. Irene married Albert E. Dengel June 13, 1951. He died September 26, 1967. Irene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, Daughters of Isabella, served on the board of directors for the Heartland Symphony Orchestra and Friends of the Carnegie Library. She also served on the Chi Rho (Key Row) housing advisory board for 10 years; served on the first Senior Center Commission during the planning and building the Little Falls Senior Center. She was an active member of the Veterans Remembrance Memorial Committee. For many years she did volunteer work as a "Pink Lady" at St. Gabriel's Hospital and also volunteered at the Morrison County Historical Society, researching historical background for their newsletters. Irene's hobbies included crocheting afghans; reading, flowers and enjoyed playing bridge. She especially enjoyed the Tuesday Bridge Club. She was actively interested in the activities and careers of her sons and their families. She moved from Little Falls to Pinehurst, NC where her son, Jim and his wife, Margaret, live in 2009. During her final years she lived at Elmcroft Assisted Living, in nearby Southern Pines, NC. Survivors include her sons, James L. (Margaret) Hamernick, Pinehurst, NC, John A. Dengel, Houston, TX; grandchildren, Jason and Conner Dengel, Houston, TX; step grandchildren; Bryan (Christelle) Banke, San Rafael, CA, and Dyan Cocchi, Pinehurst, NC; ; sister-in-law, Josephine (Lawrence) Matlock, Burnsville, and brothers-in-law, George Hamernick and Romain (Bernice) Hamernick, St. Paul; nieces and nephews; step great grandchildren, Nikoli Cocchi and Yseult Banke. She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, brother, Charles H. Timm and sister, Dorothy.
