Leo B. Schmidt

Leo B. Schmidt was born May 26, 1925 in Sandstone, MN to the late Joseph & Emma (Trapp) Schmidt. He grew up in Sandstone and graduated from the Sandstone High School in 1943. Leo began working for Minnesota Power as a maintenance worker while in high school. In 1946, Leo began working full time for Minnesota Power at the Scanlon Power Station. He was united in marriage to Lorraine J. Komar on May 24, 1947 at St. Isadore’s Catholic Church in Sturgeon Lake, MN. and transferred to the Sylvan Power Station. In 1962, the couple moved to Little Falls. After working up to general foreman and 40 years of loyal service, Leo retired from Minnesota Power in 1985. Leo was a history buff and enjoyed visiting historic sites while traveling. He also enjoyed reading, gardening, country music and old time dancing. Leo enjoyed hunting antelope and mule deer in Wyoming & Montana with his son, Gary. Short trips to Deadwood, SD with daughter, Diane & son in law, Paul were always fun and interesting. Leo & Lorraine made plans to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this May. Leo was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie, MN. Leo B. Schmidt is survived by his wife, Lorraine J. Schmidt; sons, Gary Schmidt & wife, Carlotta of Lake Nebagamon, WI and Loren Schmidt & wife, Susan of Lake Minnetonka, MN; daughters, Diane Hommerding & husband, Paul of Alexandria, MN; Ramona Flod of Somerset, WI and Linda Schmidt of St. Cloud, MN; brothers, Robert ‘Bob’ Schmidt & wife, MaryLou of Moose Lake, MN; Jim Schmidt & wife, Gloria of Cloquet, MN and Vincent ‘Bud’ Schmidt & wife, Lois of Cloquet, MN; sisters, Mary Bryant of Carlton, MN and Jean Nielsen & husband, Bert of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren: Matthew, Joshua, Alexander & Maxwell Schmidt, Amanda, Stephanie, Noah & Luke Hommerding, Justin & Anona Flod and Emily & Lee Dowhower. Leo was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David who died in 1986 in a traffic accident while serving in the US Air Force as a Staff Sergeant; brothers, Christian, Daniel & William Schmidt. Honorary casket bearers will be the granddaughters. Casket bearers will be the grandsons.
